Rebecca Hayes is a Melbourne based artist working across animation, illustration, design and the visual arts. She holds a Bachelor of Art in Animation and Interactive Media from RMIT. Driven by her multidisciplinary practice, she creates work for screen, theatre, print and installation.
Her animated works utilise a range of techniques encompassing drawing, photography, stop motion and cut-outs, and have screened in exhibitions, film festivals and public spaces – including once afloat the Darling Harbour as part of the 2009 Sydney Festival. Her award winning animated short ‘The Show‘ (2010) has screened extensively across Australia and overseas. Most recently, Rebecca has been a contributing artist to ‘Fly the Colour Fantastica’, an independently published comic anthology featuring 12 Australian artists, as well as commissioned animation for the Melbourne Museum and Melbourne Theatre Company.
Currently she teaches design and animation subjects within RMIT’s School of Media and Communication, as well as regular overseas animation workshops at Yunnan University, China.
Rebecca is also one third of The Sisters Hayes, theatre designers and cross disciplinary artists who have exhibited their work in a wide variety of commercial and artist run galleries, various theatres and site specific locations throughout Melbourne. Recently they have worked on projects with ACMI, Arts Project Australia, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne International Arts Festival and Next Wave .
